HOW TO ARRANGE YOUR OWN RETREAT
by Lama Yeshe
First, set aside specific day(s) and time(s) for your retreat. This is your refuge, your sanctuary for meditation and study.
Second, notify friends and family that might expect you to be available. Request that they respect the time of your retreat, understanding that you will be in touch after the retreat ends. If you live with family or friends, negotiate ways to share space without a lot of talk.
Third, commit to a media fast: No news, social media or phone calls during the time of your retreat. This allows the mind to quiet.
Fourth, select meditation(s) to focus on, and select study materials to explore. These may be books, or study online – with care to not become sidetracked by online temptations!
Fifth, have nourishing foods in your home or retreat location.
Sixth, be sure to exercise. This might be stretching, yoga, walking or hiking. If your exercise means you meet people, commit to being relaxed with a friendly “Hello” and moving on to keep your mind quiet.
Seventh, take time to bring mindfulness into all activities. It’s natural in your practice, but also include that awareness in all the small tasks of the day – making the bed, showering, preparing food, arranging a flower offering or lighting a candle….
Finally, enjoy this precious time that you have given yourself. And, as our teachers say, “At the end of a retreat, make a commitment to your next retreat!”
