Winter Class Series: Living, Knowing We Are Dying

Living, Knowing We Are Dying

A new class with Lama Pema & Lama Yeshe

Tuesdays, January 18 – February 22, 2022
5:30 – 7:00 pm on Zoom

The subject of death and dying occupies a central place in the interior life of every human being. From the Buddhist perspective, awareness of impermanence is the single characteristic that sets humans apart from all other observable beings. Knowing we will die, allows us to prepare for that inevitable crossing.

During this class, we will explore our experiences of death; death as we would prefer to experience it; and most importantly, prepare for death when the details are largely out of our control. As a basis of shared discussion, we will utilize the book 'Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them)' by Sallie Tisdale, who has worked as a nurse in palliative care and is a longtime Zen Buddhist.

For Buddhists, death and life are not viewed as opposed or separate realities, but as part of a continuum. On this continuum, how we act in life will become the basis of our dying experience. The daily advice of the Buddha (Benefit all. Do no harm. Live ethically. This is the advice of the Buddha.) will be the basis of expanding our innate kindness and bravery, in practical and emotional ways, for a fearless passage at the end of life.
